From the Village to the Runway: Brown Girl Woke Celebrates Fa’afafine Futures Through Ballroom and Education
Brown Girl Woke, in partnership with Kaleidoscope Trust and the Samoa Fa’afafine Association, recently hosted a groundbreaking series of workshops and a vibrant Ballroom event at Tanoa Hotel that brought together over 1,000 people to celebrate gender diversity, cultural pride, and youth empowerment in Samoa.
Mathew Pitovao stated
The initiative combined SOGIESC education with expressive arts like vogue, runway, and storytelling creating safe, joyful spaces for fa’afafine, fa’atama, and gender-diverse youth to learn, connect, and thrive.
For many, it was the first time their identities were affirmed in public daylight.
“This was more than an event, it was a rite of passage,” said Ella Ganza, Mother of the Australian House of Alexander. “We saw joy, freedom, and cultural pride come alive.”
The workshops reached over 200 participants and sparked new advocacy networks, including the formation of five Ballroom houses in Samoa.
The Ball itself featured categories rooted in Pacific and global queer histories, helping youth build confidence, express resilience, and reclaim traditional roles with pride.
We extend heartfelt thanks to the sponsors and supporters who helped bring this vision to life: Lynns Getaway, Australia High Commission, Oceania NW, House of Medici, SFA, Pure Pacific Water, Le Vai, British High Commission, NZ family Sammy & Mario, House of Williams, RiRimani SamoaDats Rental, and every person who purchased a table and believed in this movement.
Brown Girl Woke remains committed to creating inclusive spaces that honor both tradition and liberation bridging generations and building futures where all young people feel seen, safe, and celebrated.
